What Size TV Should I Buy?

What Size TV Should I Buy?

Finding the right size TV for you can be a difficult task, as the specifications of TVs seem to change on a yearly basis. First we had standard HD, which was mind-blowing for the time! But now that we have things like 4K and curved screen TVs – finding the right size one can be overwhelming and outright confusing.

We all love coming home after a long day’s work and relaxing in front of our television set. It’s one of the 21st century’s most enjoyable pastimes. But you need to get it right. Because buying a TV that’s too large or too small will completely ruin the experience.

And so we have put together this guide to help you find the right size TV for your home.

How To Figure Out The Right Sized TV For You

The most influencing factor is always going to be price when it comes to choosing a TV. Because the reality is – the larger the TV, the higher the price.

There are of course some exceptions to that rule when shopping at Stellisons – as we’ve been known to offer some pretty impressive TV deals throughout the years (which you can get notified about by signing up to our email list here).

The other factor you need to take into account is how far away from the TV you’ll be sitting.

Now that may sound a bit strange, but this is going to massively impact your viewing experience.

How? Well if you have a large television screen that is too close to you, you may notice pixelation in the picture and could even be prone to eye strain.

If the television is small and too far away on the other hand, you may find yourself needing a pair of binoculars to see what’s happening on Eastenders.

Luckily there’s a pretty simple formula to determine the ideal television screen size for your home and it goes as follows:

TV Size Calculation

Distance between seat and TV / 2

The easiest way to determine which TV size is right for your home is to measure the distance between your seat and your television in inches.

Then divide that measurement by 2 to give you the ideal TV size.

As an example, if your seat is located 144 inches (12ft) away from your television – you would benefit most from buying a 72 inch television.

Is this equation guaranteed to get it right for everybody? No. But we believe it’s a very good basis to go on.

Because you of course have to take into account things like personal preference and eyesight, which is why this is only a loose guide.

You may also find that the ideal television size based on the results of the calculation above is not one of the commonly made TV sizes from the major manufacturers. In this instance, go for the nearest TV size you can.

TV Size Guide Based On Distance From Screen

Distance From TV Recommended TV
64 Inches 32 Inch TV
80 Inches 40 Inch TV
86 Inches 43 Inch TV
98 Inches 49 Inch TV
110 Inches 55 Inch TV
130 Inches 65 Inch TV
150 Inches 75 Inch TV
154 Inches 77 Inch TV
164 Inches 82 Inch TV

How To Measure A TV

Contrary to popular belief, a TV’s screen size is actually measured from one corner to its opposing corner. For example, the distance between the bottom left corner and the top right corner is the TV’s screen size.

It’s important to point out that when we’re talking about TV sizes, we are referring to the size of the screen itself. This may be different to the size of the actual television as the bezel is not included in the screen size.
