Guide to 4k content!
The general feeling is that 4k content is hard to come by. But there are more and more movies, TV shows and sports programmes being added daily.
Amazon Prime
Amazon has an abundance of UHD content, much of which comes in HDR (High Dynamic Range). If you have an Amazon Prime account, much of this content is included in this package, and nearly ALL of its own original productions.
If you have a 4K TV with the latest software and Amazon app installed, you can find all 4k content listed in one dedicated menu.
Some of the best shows available include Amazon Originals: Clarkson, Hammond and Mays Top Gear-rivaling The Grand Tour, The Man in the High Castle, Alpha House, Mad Dogs, Transparent and Red Oaks.
Films are available too with notable mentions for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Moneyball and The Da Vinci Code which are available as rentals.
Amazon’s original shows are big supports of UHD format so expect to see the availability grow at a rapid rate.
Netflix
Netflix was one of the first to announce their streaming service would be bringing 4k content to the UK and they have delivered too with an impressive array of TV shows and movies being offered in Ultra High Definition.
To access this content, you’ll need to be signed up to their 4k UHD plan, which is £8.99 compared with their usual (very competitively priced) £5.99 plan but there are some fantastic shows on offer including House of Cards, Daredevil, Breaking Bad, Marco Polo, Black Mirror, Jessica Jones, Stranger Things and Better Call Saul.
Movies on offer include World War Z, Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Avengers, Skyfall, Philadelphia, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Smurfs 2, Jerry Maguire and Ghostbusters.
Just like Amazon’s app, the Netflix one has an area dedicated to 4k content so it’s very easy to find.
Sky Q
To watch TV in Ultra HD with Sky, you’ll need a Sky Q 2TB box with their Sky Q Multiscreen subscription and of course a 4K Ultra HD TV.
Sky Q is a real leap forward for Sky and offers a huge amount of extra features over the previous, now long-in-the-tooth Sky HD box.
Sky Q not only brings a huge range of TV shows (such as The Tunnel, Fortitude and The Blacklist), movies (including Spectre, The Martian, Everest and Lawrence of Arabia) but it also adds Documentaries and Sport. This really is the whole package but comes at a greater cost than the both Netflix and Amazon Prime combined. But here you DO get ever-changing content and far more of it too! If you really want your pick, Sky Q is a must.
YouTube
Believe it or not, YouTube has actually been supporting 4k content since 2010! You may not have access to the latest movies and shows etc but YouTube hosts an extortionate amount of content so there will be plenty of stunningly beautiful videos to watch!
4K UHD Blu Ray Players
Finally if you really want the best 4k Ultra High Definition experience for your viewing pleasure, a 4k UHD Blu Ray Player is the gadget to buy!
Streaming is a brilliant and instant way to get access to vast libraries of content but if you want to eek out every last detail available to you (whether that be in vision or sound) this is your best option.
UHD Blu Ray Discs are being released by studios at a rapid rate and prices are already starting to come down. The releases often include a blu-ray and digital copy so all your bases will be covered. Some of the best releases we’ve seen and heard so far include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition, Pacific Rim, Star Trek, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant.
So there’s a lot to choose from.
Do you remember watching HD for the first time? Now you may well find Standard Definition hard to swallow. And now if you’ve experienced 4k, watching an HD movie again is going to be tough.
